The big game is just around the corner and it is going to be a tasty one. Everyone wants a good chicken wing recipe for their game day spread. And let me tell you, this is one you will make again and again. Spicy Sweet Chicken Wings packs a ton of flavor and is incredibly easy to make.
To achieve nice crispy chicken wings, I am going to be using the parboil method. Parboiling is just partially cooking the chicken wings. Although this is just one way of achieving perfectly crispy oven baked chicken wings, it is my favorite. We want to parboil the wing in order to render out some of the fat. This process is going to remove some of the internal fat, resulting in crispier oven-baked wings.
Spicy Sweet Chicken Wings Sauce:
Now, let me tell you. The sauce is the star of the show here. So, I want to break it down for ya. It’s somewhere between buffalo and BBQ sauce. I am using an array of different store-bought condiments to make this perfectly sweet and spicy sauce.
Every ingredient adds something to the sauce while helping to keep the flavors well balanced. The coconut aminos and applesauce add sweetness and the sweetness intensifies while the sauce thickens. The BBQ sauce and orange juice add acidity and tang with a touch of natural sweetness while the hot sauce adds spice and heat.

Crispy oven-baked chicken wings tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. Not only are they Whole30 compliant, but they are perfect to add to your game day menu. Serve we fresh carrots and celery.
2.5 lbs chicken wings
1/2 cup unsweetened BBQ sauce (I like Primal kitchen BBQ sauce)
1/4 cup compliant hot sauce (I like Franks Red Hot)
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (Find great options at Target and Wholefoods)
1 tbsp coconut aminos (I like Big Tree Farms)
Juice of 1 orange
To begin, put the chicken wings in a large pot and cover with water. Transfer the pot to the stove and bring it to a boil. Boil the chicken for 7 minutes.
In the meantime, preheat the oven to 425˚F.
When the chicken is done, drain it and use paper towels to pat the chicken dry. Transfer the chicken wings to a large baking sheet, about an inch apart. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and cook the chicken for 20 minutes. Flip the chicken and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.
While the chicken cooks, add the BBQ sauce, hot sauce, applesauce, coconut aminos and orange juice to a small saucepan. Stir and bring the sauce to a simmer. Lower the heat to medium-low and continue to simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes until it starts to thicken. Turn the sauce off and remove about half of the sauce from the pan and set it aside.
Add the hot chicken into the saucepan with half of the sauce. Toss the chicken with the sauce, adding more sauce as needed. Serve immediately.
I just enjoy serving this with fresh carrots and celery but you can also serve with homemade or Whole30 compliant ranch dressing
